Ragweed
Not a prairie perenial but an annual weed of agricultural and and other land disturbances and a main cause for hayfever irritation.
Goldenrod is often blamed for hayfever, but the real culprit is ragweed.
They flower at the same time, but showy flowers use their color to attract pollinating insects because their pollen is too heavy to drift on the wind, while plants with pollen light enough to drift on the wind and therefore to cause hayfever do not need color and are therefore an inconspicuous pale green.
